ಗೊಕಾಕ ಫಾಲ್ಸ್ (Gokak Falls)

Gokak Falls, located on the Ghataprabha river in Belgaum district, is 6 km away from Gokak town. After meandering lazily through rugged terrain, the Ghataprabha river takes a leap of 52m over a sandstone cliff into a picturesque gorge. The Falls is horse-shoe shaped at the crest, with a flood breadth of 177m. During rainy season, the thick reddish brown water sweeps far over the brink of the cliff with a dull roar that can be heard at some distance. There is a hanging bridge across the river which stands 14m above the rock bed.

WHAT TO SEE: One of the interesting features of this place are the monuments from the Chalukya era that are present on either banks of the rocky gorge. You can check out the inscriptions dating back to the sixth century or wander through the serene temples of Shanmukha, Mahalingeshwara, Basavanna or Durga. There is an old electricity generation station which used to generate electricity during the 1880s. A ropeway connects the power station to the cliff top.

HOW TO REACH: Belgaum airport is the nearest airport. Gokak town is 65 km by road from Belgaum.

BY RAIL: Gokak Road station is the closest . You can hire a taxi, auto or tempo which will take you to the Falls.

WHERE TO STAY: Although there may not be any good places for an overnight stay at the Falls, you can book into a hotel, like Anmol Hotel in Gokak city.

BEST SEASON TO VISIT: July to September is the best season to visit the place.
